Individually planned

Bespoke glass shelving: planning each compartment

Glass shelving can hold books, art, plants or everyday objects while keeping the room visually open. Planning starts with the contents as well as overall dimensions. How tall are books, folders or vases? Will particular shelves carry heavy items? Even spacing creates a calm arrangement, while varied heights can accommodate a more diverse collection.

For a wall or recess, we consider width and depth alongside height. A narrow unit beside a door needs different proportions from a broad bookcase. Several modules may be preferable where one large piece would dominate or delivery access is limited. A room divider needs to work from several viewpoints; stability, access and any securing requirements are assessed separately.

Shelves, supporting sides and connections work as a system. Longer spans or heavy books may require a different arrangement, additional support or alternative material thicknesses. There is no single load rating for every bespoke version. Describing the contents helps us distinguish between light display use and densely filled bookshelves.

Clear glass, Optiwhite, satin finishes or partially lacquered areas change the appearance. Wooden components can add warmth and enclosed storage. Asymmetric layouts and widths adapted to the room can also be discussed. These pages concern complete shelving furniture and coordinated construction; a request for an individual cut glass shelf is a different brief.

Glass finishes: clear, satin and lacquered

The choice of glass changes the character of a piece. Clear float glass allows light and views to pass through, while its polished edges show a natural green tint. Looking through the edge of a larger, particularly deeper panel creates a longer optical path. The edge can therefore appear darker and more intensely green, sometimes almost black in particular lighting.

Thickness also affects the appearance. A small sample cannot fully reproduce the edge colour of a large tabletop.

Optiwhite is low-iron glass with substantially reduced inherent colour. Its edges are still not completely colourless. Depending on size, thickness, viewing angle and lighting, a subtle greenish to blue-turquoise tint remains visible. This matters when comparing a small side table with a large tabletop. Reflections and visible edges are part of the material’s character.

Satin glass creates a softer, translucent appearance. On coloured versions, lacquer is applied to the underside or rear of the glass: you see the colour through the smooth glass face. A satin appearance combined with colour can also be considered where appropriate to the model. The treated surface and intended finish are specified for the individual piece.

Our furniture uses glass thicknesses including 10, 12, 15 and 19 mm. The appropriate thickness depends on dimensions, unsupported spans, supports, connections and intended loads, rather than appearance alone. Safety glass is a separately agreed bespoke specification and should not be assumed for every illustrated design.

Shelving for everyday life.

These concepts concern complete shelving units based on our models. Width, height and depth are planned alongside the compartment layout. For replacement shelves, please identify the existing model.

All interior images below are generated concept visualisations based on our models. Dimensions and finishes are proposals; feasibility, materials and delivery dates are confirmed in your personal quotation.

Custom colours and partially lacquered glass

A new piece can pick up the colours already present in your home. We can discuss custom colours for glass or suitable wooden components, for example to coordinate with kitchen fronts, a sideboard or another lacquered piece. An existing colour reference or physical sample is useful. A screen photograph can suggest a direction but is not a reliable colour match.

Colour To complement your interior, including custom colours
Surface Full or partial lacquering by agreement
Matching Agree the colour and finish using a sample

Partial lacquering is another possibility. One area of a glass panel can remain transparent while another has a coloured backing, creating a deliberate combination of clear and opaque zones. Their shape, size and position are planned around the model and its use. The lacquer is applied beneath or behind the glass, rather than as an opaque coating on the upper working face.

The edge remains recognisably glass.

Colour appearance depends on its substrate and finish. A shade seen through float glass may look different through Optiwhite or on a lacquered wood-based panel. Lighting, surrounding materials and sheen also affect the result.

Where close coordination is important, we discuss physical samples and the precise material before manufacture, including the transitions between clear and coloured areas.

Combining wood, glass and metal

Wood introduces warmth and natural grain into a transparent piece. A drawer, tray or distinctive wooden leg can provide a deliberate contrast to glass. Consider the direction and scale of the grain as well as the species. A wide front creates a different effect from several narrow drawers. Existing flooring need not be copied exactly; a carefully chosen contrast can work just as well.

Solid wood, veneered components and lacquered wood-based panels are different specifications. We identify the material for each model and component. Furniture containing wood is not automatically solid wood throughout. Depending on the design, oak, walnut or a coloured lacquered front may be considered. Dimensions, appearance and intended use guide the choice.

Table legs and supports can involve metal, chrome finishes, stainless steel, wood or glass, depending on construction. Polished surfaces create a different effect from brushed stainless steel, while glass supports leave more of the floor visible. Changing materials is also a structural decision: connections, sections and stability are reviewed for the proposed design.

Planning dimensions around the room and its use

Measure the available width, depth and height. It helps to distinguish between your preferred dimensions and the absolute maximum available. Include skirting boards, radiators, sockets, window ledges and doors. Decide whether cables need to run behind the furniture. A recess may vary in width, so measurements at more than one point can be useful.

Topic For your project
Dimensions Width, depth and height – an initial idea is welcome
Use Location, load and required clearances
Finish Glass, base, colour and additional functions

The surrounding space matters too. Drawers need opening clearance, display doors need room to swing and dining chairs need space to move. Consider the delivery route, including the entrance, staircase, lift and narrow passages. These details can affect the sensible dimensions or arrangements for assembly at the destination.

Photographs from two directions help us understand the setting. Add object dimensions and weights for shelving and display cabinets, equipment details for media furniture, or seat and armrest heights for tables. Marking a proposed footprint with paper or removable tape can help you compare sizes. Final manufacturing dimensions are then agreed as part of the project.

Free, no-obligation enquiries – from one piece to a hotel project

Your enquiry and initial consultation are free and without obligation. This applies to a small side table just as much as an order for 200 tables for a hotel. You do not need a finished design or a complete material specification. Start with the intended use, approximate dimensions, quantity and any preferred timeframe. We will help you work through the remaining decisions.

For an individual piece, the existing interior and its intended position usually guide the discussion. For a larger project, we also consider consistent finishes, different room types, everyday use and delivery arrangements. A hotel bedroom, reception area and meeting room can place different demands on the same underlying design.

Related pieces can be developed as a coordinated collection rather than planned separately.

The price of bespoke furniture depends on dimensions, materials, processing, equipment and construction. Prices on linked model pages apply to the standard specification selected there. Your individual quotation sets out the agreed design and proposed delivery timing. An enquiry based on an image or planning sketch does not place an order.

Complimentary premium delivery and agreed timing

Our complimentary premium delivery covers Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Liechtenstein. The service includes an agreed delivery appointment, carrying the furniture to its intended position, unpacking, assembly where required and removal of packaging. For large or heavy glass furniture, discussing access early is particularly useful.

Please mention the floor, lift, narrow stairs or unusual access conditions.

Topic For your project
Delivery time Usually around 4–6 weeks; timing confirmed in the quotation
Need it sooner? Please ask about available standard versions
Destination Confirm premium delivery and conditions for your location

For other countries, transport arrangements and charges are discussed individually in the quotation. More distant destinations can involve a longer delivery time. Delivery normally takes approximately 4–6 weeks; the timing for your particular bespoke order is confirmed in your quotation, taking the specification and transport arrangements into account.

Many products are also available from stock in standard versions. If you need furniture sooner, please ask about an available alternative. Stock availability and earlier delivery are checked individually and are not a general promise for every bespoke design.

Your idea

Choose an example and add your preferred dimensions and finish. If dimensions are still open, describe the space and intended use.

Discuss it together

We review the model, proportions, materials and construction. A photograph, sketch or equipment dimensions help answer specific questions.

The agreed version is quoted with its price and timing. A standard model’s displayed price is not a price for the bespoke piece.

Personal advice

A question before you begin?

Not every idea starts with finished dimensions. Tell us what your furniture needs to do.

Can shelving be made for an alcove?

Adaptation may be possible. Measure the alcove at several points and allow for skirting boards and installation clearance. We agree the final dimensions together.

Are the images completed customer projects?

No. The labelled interior images are generated design concepts. They explore proportions and settings based on our models. Each specification must be technically agreed before manufacture.

What will my bespoke piece cost?

It depends on the model, dimensions, materials and construction. You receive an individual quotation. Standard prices on linked model pages do not automatically apply to these concepts.

How long does delivery take?

Delivery usually takes approximately 4–6 weeks. The specific timing for your bespoke piece is confirmed in the quotation. Transport to more distant destinations may take longer.

Could I receive my furniture sooner?

Many products are also held in stock in standard versions. If you need a piece sooner, please ask about a suitable available alternative. Faster delivery depends on the model, finish and destination.
